Rob Covington

Multimedia Artist

Rob Covington

Rob Covington is a Utah-born multimedia artist. His imagery can be described as hypnotic tranquility. His work explores the idea of beauty, often focusing on nature and social gatherings.

As much as Rob loves to learn, teach, and collaborate he can also be a one-man band creating all the necessary parts to complete a project. His love of gardening has taught him that to survive and thrive, diversity and synergy are key. He organizes the plants and flowers to be companions to each other, each providing what the other needs from nutrients to pest control. Much in the same way, Rob has developed his talents in a multitude of specialties that harmonize together. This includes; photography, videography, motion graphics animation, audio mixing, multiformat print media, website development, graphic design, illustration, and fine art.

Rob holds a bachelor in computer art from The Academy of Art University of San Francisco, CA

He was elected Art Director by his graduating class for their collaborative final project featuring the California Academy of Science Museum in SanFrancisco.

Interview

I’m a multimedia artist. This means that I wear a lot of hats. I’m the director, steady camera operator, lighting technician, video editor, concept creator, graphic designer, special effects artist, photographer, illustrator, motion graphics animator, audio mixer, basically whatever is needed.

I believe that for art to be “good” or to be a successful it has to pass these three tests.

1st – Form

Art must be aesthetically appealing utilizing the elements of art such as color, dimension, medium, melody, space, texture, and value. The form also includes visual design principles, such as arrangement, balance, contrast, emphasis, harmony, proportion, and rhythm.

2nd – Function

Art must be fitting for its purpose. If the design is for a billboard for example, can it be read from a distance in a fast-moving vehicle? Is it refined enough to get the message in 5 seconds?

3rd – Feeling

For art to be truly successful it needs to evoke an emotional response. After all, art is an expression. It needs to move you to feel something.

I like to call it “creativity on command”. Some projects don’t have time for you to wait until you are inspired. When there is a deadline you have to rely on your experience and discipline to help you achieve it.

To be an artist, it’s not as much what you do, but how you do it. If you put enough passion, love, honesty, and skill into what you do, it becomes an art form. The most important thing though is to never stop learning.
